Mark Zuckerberg addressed the United Nations twice to make internet access a global priority.  He addressed the UN Sustainable Development Conference, and later the UN Private Sector where UN Sec Gen  Ban Ki-moon and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were present

“Connecting the world is one of the fundamental challenges of our generation,” Zuckerberg said. “More than 4 billion people don’t have a voice online.”

In the Philippines, faster and cheaper internet access is a big challenge. 7 out of 10 Filipinos according to UN report do not have internet access.  This is sad.  Thus we should be concerned and pay attention to this news.

This initiative is in line with UN goal of eradicating extreme poverty by 2030.  It is theorized that one out of 10 people who have access to internet have risen out of poverty.  Truly, the remarkable progress that our society has made in the Philippines were mostly with netizens whose mindset were changed and globalized by the internet.   Internet has doubled knowledge every two years, and has made many people citizens of the world, and opened many opportunities for every one - employment, business and more

The call is in line with ONE campaign.  Its ‘Connectivity Declaration’ states that internet access is “essential for achieving humanity’s goals” and the group seeks to deliver it to everyone on Earth by 2020.  It has pledges of about $25 billion

Will this call by no less than the FB chief make an impact on our NTC regulators, our country leaders and CEO of telcos.  Are we together in making our country better and with the vision to remove poverty in the world.

Is free internet in public places part of this campaign.

To "Heal the World"
